Dussehra in Dubai 2026 — Vijayadashami, Ayudha Puja, and a Tuesday that will actually finish

Published: 5 October 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 12 min read

Dussehra in Dubai is the tenth day of the same fortnight a courtyard in Sultanpur already knows: the kalash comes down, the water goes to a plant, tools of work are honoured, and the house steps back into ordinary time. What people search is a date, a Vijay muhurat copied from an Indian clock, and a Ravana they have seen on a screen. What the day actually is, in a Gulf flat, is shorter and more local than that. Families write from Jumeirah, International City, Al Nahda, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi asking whether Dashami 'counts' if they are at the office at two in the afternoon, whether a laptop may sit on the puja cloth, and whether a building that will not allow a fire has already cancelled Vijayadashami. The Ramayana does not name an emirate. It names a crossing.

I am writing this on 5 October 2026, fifteen days before the day. Sharad Navratri, on the working panchang I use, runs Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October 2026. Vijayadashami — Dussehra — is Tuesday 20 October. Pitru Paksha ends Saturday 10 October; the kalash is set the next morning. A separate article on this site is the nine nights in a Dubai apartment. Another is the nine names and the all-India fortnight. What follows is the tenth day: Ayudha Puja, the afternoon window, visarjan without a river, and a working Tuesday that can still be kept whole.

2026 dates a Gulf household can put on the fridge

Panchang shifts a civil date by a few hours from city to city. Confirm Dubai's sunrise and the Dashami tithi before you lock Tuesday afternoon, then keep that one calendar. Do not switch at noon because a second website looked nicer.

  • Sunday 11 October 2026 — Pratipada, Ghatasthapana. The nine nights begin.
  • Sunday 18 October — in many North Indian listings, Maha Ashtami. Kanya puja in the households that keep it.
  • Monday 19 October — Maha Navami in the calendar I started the nine nights on; Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja in the South and in many offices. Some Dubai panchangs this year print Ashtami and Navami on the same Monday, because a tithi is skipped under the local sky. If that is the sheet your temple or your family priest is using, keep it for both days. Do not keep Ashtami on the 18th from one site and Navami on the 19th from another.
  • Tuesday 20 October 2026 — Vijayadashami, Dussehra. This is the civil date on both the India sheet and the Dubai sheet I am looking at. The Vijay muhurat is early afternoon GST, a short window around two o'clock — on the working figure, roughly 1:59 pm to 2:44 pm in Dubai. Confirm it the morning of the 20th against a panchang set to Dubai, not against a message from Lucknow.
  • Wednesday 21 October — Bijoya Dashami in many Bengali houses, the visarjan of the pandal Durga. If that is your form, the tenth day for you is a day later. Say so in the house on the 11th, not on the 20th in the lift.

Tuesday is a working day in the UAE. Friday and Saturday are the weekend. A sitting that asks people to arrive at ten in the morning on the 20th will be a puja the host keeps alone. Plan the cloth for the lunch hour or for the evening the building will still allow, and do not pretend a four-hour programme is the vidhi.

Two stories, one tenth day

Vijayadashami is Rama's victory over Ravana in the Hindi belt, and Durga's victory over Mahishasura in the east and in the Devi Mahatmya. They are not two festivals competing for the same Tuesday. They are two public languages for the same crossing out of the nine nights. A Gujarati house that has already danced nine nights of garba, a Tamil house that has kept Golu, a Telangana house that has carried Bathukamma, a Bengali house waiting for visarjan on the 21st, a Hindi-belt house that will only light a lamp and cut the javara — Dubai puts all of these in one city, often in one building. Keep the form the house can finish. Visit the other as guests, not as inspectors.

I will not publish a list of which story is 'correct'. Jyotish has nothing to add to that argument. The day is the Dashami tithi, local, and the work the household actually does on it.

Vijay muhurat: GST, not a converted IST

Gulf Standard Time is one and a half hours behind India. A muhurat named in IST while the family is sitting in Dubai names the wrong hour of the wrong sky. The tithi is local. If the puja is in Dubai, the panchang is Dubai's. 'Vijay muhurat 3:30 pm IST' is 2:00 pm GST — sometimes useful, often a coincidence, never a method. Do not subtract ninety minutes from an Indian app and call the result a Dubai muhurat. Open a panchang that knows Dubai's sunrise.

The Vijay window is short, often under an hour, in the aparahna — the afternoon, not dawn and not after dinner. On a working Tuesday that window will fall inside office hours for most of the city. A lamp at home at 2:10 pm GST, even if you are the only adult in the room, is a Dashami. A grand aarti at 9 pm because that was when everyone finished work is a gathering. It can still be beautiful. It is not the Vijay muhurat. Name the clock. Keep the short window if you can; keep the evening lamp if you cannot. Completeness beats a screenshot.

WhatsApp is how a consultation is booked, in English or Hindi, with the city named. There is no online payment on this site. Dakshina, if a sitting or a recitation is arranged, is spoken before the date is fixed. I am based in Sultanpur. Travel, an India sitting, and a live link are the three honest forms. A flight is not promised on a page.

Ayudha Puja in a Dubai flat

Ayudha Puja — Shastra Puja in the north — is the honouring of the tools of one's work. In a palace it was weapons. In a Gulf apartment it is what actually earns the rent: a laptop, a notebook, a stethoscope, a set of keys to a car that is driven every morning, a measuring tape, a child's school books. Clean them the evening of the 18th or the morning of the 19th. Place them on a cloth. Turmeric, a few grains of rice, a flower the market has that week. A lamp. That is the seat. You have not failed Dashami if the cloth holds a closed laptop instead of a sword.

Monday 19 October is the day most South Indian households in the UAE will keep Ayudha Puja this year, with Vijayadashami the next afternoon. If your office will not let a diya onto a desk, keep the cloth at home before you leave, and sit for two minutes with the same tools when you return. A vehicle puja in a basement car park is a courtesy to the neighbours and to the building: no oil on the concrete, no blocking a fire exit, no loudspeaker. Ask the building before you ask a colour chart.

Saraswati Puja on Navami — books, instruments, a child's bag — belongs to the same cloth in many houses. Vidyarambham, the first letters for a child, is a Dashami custom in Kerala and in some Tamil homes. If that is already your form, the afternoon window on the 20th is the hour. If it is not your form, do not invent it because a reel looked tender. A child who is not ready to hold a slate has not missed Vijayadashami.

Visarjan without a river, Ravana without a field

A rented tower in Dubai will not give you the Ganga, and it will not give you a maidan. The kalash water of the nine nights goes to a plant, a garden, a clean pot that then goes to earth — not a kitchen drain, and not a fountain the municipality will fine. A small murti, if you installed one, is immersed in a bucket and that water follows the same path. This is not a lesser visarjan. It is the visarjan the room can finish.

Ravana dahan is a public language of the Hindi belt. In the UAE it happens where a community already has permission for a ground, a park, an evening the police already know about. A balcony that looks like a lane in India will look like a complaint in Dubai. If your circle does not already burn an effigy, you have not failed Dussehra. You have skipped a regional custom. Light the lamp. Cut the javara if you grew it. Put the water on the plant.

Bengali visarjan on the 21st is a community act when a pandal exists, and a household act when it does not. Sindur khela, the red of Bijoya, is for the houses that already keep it. Do not borrow intensity from a Kolkata video and then discover the building has a no-colour rule on the corridor.

Shami, jammi, and the leaf that is not gold

In many Telangana and Andhra houses, Vijayadashami includes Shami puja — the jammi tree, leaves exchanged with elders as a blessing that the old verse calls gold. Dubai will not always give you a shami tree in the compound. A few leaves sourced that morning, or a honest sankalp that names the tree you cannot reach, is enough. Do not buy a plastic branch and call it the forest Rama sat under. The verse is about the crossing, not about a prop.

Aparajita puja, a small climbing plant, is another Dashami strand in some paddhatis. If the house already knows it, keep it. If it does not, the lamp and the tools are the day.

What Dussehra in Dubai is not

It is not a stamp that a new job, a visa, a court date or a marriage will now proceed. Vijayadashami is traditionally an open day for beginning studies, for touching a new tool, for a short sankalp of work. That is a household use of the afternoon. It is not a rewritten dasha. I will sit with a recitation. I will not sell a cancellation of Saturn, a promotion, or an Emirates ID. A matching, a katha date, a medical decision — none of them is settled by a Tuesday in October.

It is not a discount on every sankalp postponed since Ghatasthapana. The nine nights have their own article. Dashami is the crossing, not a second Navratri crammed into a lunch break. A house that kept the kalash for nine evenings and missed the Vijay window has still kept the fortnight. A house that skipped the nine nights and arrived only for a photograph with an effigy has kept a picture.

A Tuesday a Gulf household can actually finish

  • Monday 19 October, morning GST: Ayudha Puja. Tools, books, keys on a cloth. Lamp. Two minutes if that is all the school run allows.
  • Tuesday 20 October, around two in the afternoon GST: the Vijay window, if you can be home or on a quiet balcony. Short sankalp. If you are at a desk, a closed door and the same sankalp without a flame is still a sitting. Light the lamp when you return.
  • Tuesday evening: javara cut if you grew it; kalash water on a plant; a small murti into a bucket, then to earth. Ravana only if your circle already has a ground.
  • Wednesday 21 October: Bengali visarjan if that is the house. Do not mix it with a Hindi-belt Dashami you already finished on Tuesday.

Tell the building. Volume, fire, a corridor that must stay clear — these are the conditions under which the tenth day will be allowed to finish. A muhurat that looks perfect and gets the aarti stopped is a worse muhurat than the next hour the corridor will tolerate.

What to send on WhatsApp if you want the day discussed

  • City: Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi — not 'UAE' alone.
  • Whether you want the Vijay window explained, a short recitation over a live link with the cloth in your room, or a travel date if the calendar allows.
  • Which form the house actually keeps: kalash, Ayudha, Golu, Bathukamma, Bengali visarjan.
  • Whether Tuesday afternoon is possible, or only the evening.
  • Which clock the room will use: GST.

Questions families in the UAE ask

When is Dussehra 2026 in Dubai?

Tuesday 20 October 2026, Vijayadashami. Confirm the afternoon window against a Dubai panchang the same morning.

When is Ayudha Puja 2026 in the UAE?

Monday 19 October in most South Indian houses this year, with Dashami the next day. If your priest prints both on the 19th, follow him for the whole close, not half and half.

Can we start a new job or a child's letters on Dussehra?

The day is traditionally used to begin studies and to honour tools. That is a sankalp, not a promise about work or a visa. I will not date a career from a Tuesday.

Does a laptop on the cloth count as Ayudha Puja?

Yes, if it is the tool you actually work with. Clean it, seat it, light the lamp. The paddhati did not wait for a sword.

Must we go to a Ravana dahan?

No. A public fire is one form. The home lamp and the plant are another. Missing a ground does not cancel Dashami.

Can the recitation be live from India?

Yes, if the cloth is in your room and the clock you name is GST. Travel is another form, arranged where dates allow, not promised as a package on a page.

Where does the kalash water go?

A plant, a garden, a clean pot that then goes to earth. Not a drain, and not a public fountain.
