Shubh Muhurat for Vivah, Griha Pravesh and More
A shubh muhurat for vivah, griha pravesh, mundan, namkaran or a new venture — chosen from the panchang and your own chart.
A shubh muhurat chosen from the panchang and matched to the right person’s chart — for vivah, griha pravesh, mundan or a new venture. Online too.
What this includes
- Panchang shuddhi: tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karana
- Lagna shuddhi for the hour of the rite
- Chandra bal and Tara bal from the right person’s chart
- Kharmas, Chaturmas, Holashtak, Pitru Paksha and Guru/Shukra asta checked
- Timing calculated for the city where the rite is held
Families usually ask me for a muhurat as if it were a date printed somewhere, waiting to be found: a list of good wedding days for the year, a lucky Thursday, the date a neighbour used for a griha pravesh. A muhurat is not a date taken from a list. It is a window — sometimes a few hours, sometimes less — in which the panchang is clean, the rising sign suits the act, and the sky supports the person the rite is for. The same day can be right for one family and wrong for the next. I choose it for the rite, the person and the place.
What a muhurat is for
The tradition asks for a muhurat before a beginning — a samskara, or a new undertaking whose start is treated as its seed.
- Vivah.
- Griha pravesh, and bhoomi pujan before building.
- Mundan (chudakarma) and namkaran.
- Annaprashan and vidyarambh, a child’s first grain and first letters.
- Vyapar arambh — opening a shop, a firm or an office.
- Buying a vehicle, a house or land.
A festival puja already has its tithi. A muhurat is chosen when the family itself decides when something begins.
The five limbs of the panchang
Panchang means five limbs. A muhurat must first be clean in all five.
- Tithi — the lunar day. The rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi) and Amavasya are set aside for most beginnings.
- Vaar — the weekday, and the graha that rules it.
- Nakshatra — the Moon’s nakshatra at the time. Each rite has its preferred set. For vivah the texts name Rohini, Mrigashira, Hasta, Anuradha and Revati among others; for griha pravesh, the fixed and gentle nakshatras such as Rohini and the three Uttaras.
- Yoga — one of the twenty-seven Sun–Moon combinations. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are among those avoided.
- Karana — half a tithi. Vishti karana, known as Bhadra, is avoided for auspicious work.
Lagna shuddhi — the hour inside the day
A clean day is not yet a muhurat. Within the day the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and the act is fixed inside a lagna that suits it. I look for benefics in the kendras and trikonas, and an eighth house free of malefics. For vivah, the seventh and eighth houses from the muhurat lagna are examined with particular care. This is why a muhurat often names a time window — the pheras between one hour and another — and not only a date.
Periods set aside for auspicious beginnings
Some stretches of the year are avoided for vivah, griha pravesh and similar beginnings, however clean a single day may look.
- Kharmas — while the Sun is in Dhanu and in Meen, about a month each, one in winter and one in spring.
- Chaturmas — from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi in Kartik, while Vishnu is held to be in yoga-nidra. Weddings traditionally wait for Dev Uthani.
- Holashtak — the eight days before Holika Dahan.
- Pitru Paksha — the fortnight given to the ancestors. It is a time for shraddh, not for new beginnings.
- Guru or Shukra asta — when Jupiter or Venus is combust, too close to the Sun to be seen. Vivah in particular waits for them to rise again.
- Adhik maas — the extra lunar month, in the years that have one.
Families sometimes take these as things to fear. They are better read as the calendar’s own rhythm: times for rest, for the ancestors, for restraint. I will not give a muhurat inside them for a vivah or a griha pravesh. Regional customs differ in detail, and I respect the custom your family keeps.
Whose chart the muhurat is matched to
A muhurat is not only a clean day in the sky. It must also be a good day for the person it is for.
- For vivah, the Moon signs of both bride and groom, with Guru bal for the bride and Surya bal for the groom, as the North Indian tradition reads it.
- For griha pravesh or bhoomi pujan, the head of the household — usually the person in whose name the sankalp is taken.
- For mundan, namkaran and annaprashan, the child.
- For vyapar arambh, the person starting the work, or the main partner.
From that person’s janma rashi and janma nakshatra I check Chandra bal and Tara bal: whether the Moon on that day stands well from their own Moon, and whether the day’s nakshatra falls in a favourable count from their own. Where birth details are not known, the tradition sometimes uses the naam rashi instead. When I do that, I say so.
Why the place matters
Sunrise, the change of tithi and the lagna all depend on where the rite is held. A muhurat calculated for Sultanpur is not the same hour in Mumbai, and certainly not in another country. Tell me the city where the rite will actually happen. If the wedding is in one city and the family lives in another, the muhurat is calculated for the wedding’s city.
How I choose a muhurat
- You tell me the rite, the person it is for, and the city.
- You tell me the window the family can manage — a month, a season, or the dates the house or hall will be ready.
- I set aside the periods closed for that rite, and check the panchang day by day inside your window.
- I match the clean days against the chart of the person the rite is for.
- I fix the lagna within the chosen day, and give you the day with a time window.
- If no clean day falls inside your window, I say so plainly and suggest the nearest suitable one, rather than stretching the rules to fit.
What a muhurat does not do
A muhurat is a right start, chosen with care. It is not a guarantee. It does not secure a happy marriage, a sale, a tenant or a business result. A rite held in haste and quarrel is not a good beginning even inside a good muhurat. A calm, careful rite in a modest window is often better than a crowded one on a famous date. This is why I do not publish lists of ‘the best dates of the year’. The date that is right for you depends on you.
In person or online
A muhurat needs no samagri and no fire, so it is easily done at a distance. Families send the details on WhatsApp, and we speak by phone or video where there are choices to weigh. Families in Sultanpur and the nearby districts can sit with me in person. If the family also wants the rite itself performed, that is arranged separately. Dakshina is spoken on WhatsApp; there is no online payment.
What a muhurat needs from you
- The rite or undertaking, and the person it is for.
- That person’s date, time and place of birth — for vivah, both bride’s and groom’s.
- The city where the rite will be held.
- The window the family can manage, and any fixed constraint such as a hall booking, leave from work or travel.
Questions people ask
- Can you send a list of vivah muhurat dates for the year?
- I do not give a general list. Printed lists show days when the panchang is clean, but a wedding muhurat must also suit the Moon signs of both bride and groom, and its lagna must be fixed for the city of the wedding. Tell me the season the family can manage, and I will find the clean days inside it for your two charts.
- Why are weddings not held in Kharmas or Chaturmas?
- In Kharmas the Sun is in Dhanu or Meen. In Chaturmas, from Devshayani Ekadashi to Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Vishnu is held to be in yoga-nidra. The tradition treats both as times for restraint and devotion rather than new beginnings, so vivah and griha pravesh wait. Regional customs vary in detail, and I follow the custom your family keeps.
- Can a muhurat be fixed online for a family living abroad?
- Yes. A muhurat needs birth details and the place of the rite, not samagri. Send the details on WhatsApp and name the city where the rite will actually be held. The tithi, sunrise and lagna are calculated for that city, not copied from an Indian calendar. Where there are choices to weigh, we speak by phone or video.
- What if there is no good muhurat in the month we want?
- Then I say so plainly. Sometimes a closed period such as Chaturmas or Kharmas covers the whole window; sometimes the clean days do not suit the person’s chart. I suggest the nearest suitable day rather than stretch the rules. Where a date truly cannot move, I explain what the tradition allows and what it does not, and the family decides.
- Do I need a muhurat to buy a vehicle or open a shop?
- Many families take one, and the tradition supports it for any new beginning. The process is simpler than for vivah: a clean tithi, a suitable nakshatra and weekday, Bhadra avoided, and the day checked against the buyer’s or owner’s chart. A muhurat is a careful start. It does not guarantee sales, safety or profit, and should not be sold as if it did.
