Kundli Milan (Gun Milan) for Marriage
Ashtakoot gun milan for marriage, with Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal read alongside — and both charts read whole.
Ashtakoot gun milan of both charts, with Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal read beside the 36-point score. Both families send details; in person or online.
What this includes
- Ashtakoot score out of 36, koot by koot
- Nadi and Bhakoot examined with the recorded exceptions
- Mangal Dosh counted in both charts
- Seventh house, Navamsha and coming dashas of both
- A plain account of what the score does and does not say
Kundli Milan reaches most families as a single number. Someone has put the two sets of birth details into an app, and the message travels through the family faster than either chart: twenty-two out of thirty-six, so it is fine; fourteen, so it is over. Kundli Milan is more than that number and less than a verdict. The thirty-six gunas of Ashtakoot compare the two Moons. Matching proper reads both charts whole — the seventh houses, Mangal, the dashas ahead — and then sets the number inside what it has found. I do both, and I say which is which.
What Ashtakoot measures
Ashtakoot Gun Milan places the two Moon signs and the two janma nakshatras against eight koots. Their points add up to thirty-six:
- Varna — 1
- Vashya — 2
- Tara — 3
- Yoni — 4
- Graha Maitri — 5
- Gana — 6
- Bhakoot — 7
- Nadi — 8
Every one of these is lunar. The lagna, the seventh house, Mangal and the dashas are not inside the thirty-six. That is not a flaw in the method. It is the reason the method was never meant to be used alone.
Why eighteen is a floor, not a judgement
The common rule is that eighteen of thirty-six is the minimum, with higher bands called middling, good and excellent. That rule sorts a number. It does not predict a marriage. A pair scoring sixteen with strong sevenths, a supportive Guru and no Mangal question is not a ‘worse match’ than a pair scoring thirty with a weak seventh and a hard dasha due in the first years. Families who stop at the number are reading one page of a longer book. I give the number, because it is what you came for. Then I tell you what else the two charts say.
Nadi dosh and Bhakoot dosh
Nadi
Nadi sorts the twenty-seven nakshatras into three groups: Aadi, Madhya and Antya. If both Moons fall in the same group, the koot scores zero of eight and is called Nadi dosh. Eight is the largest single koot, so it pulls the total down hard. The tradition takes it seriously; it is read as too much sameness of constitution. The same tradition records exceptions — for example, the same nakshatra falling in two different signs. I name the dosh where it is present, and the exception where it applies. I use neither to frighten.
Bhakoot
Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. Distances of 6/8 and 2/12 are counted as Bhakoot dosh and score zero of seven. When the lords of the two signs are friends, or other strengths in the charts compensate, the texts hold the dosh softened. This koot is where the sentence ‘the rashis do not match’ comes from. It concerns the Moon signs, not the sun signs of a magazine column.
Manglik matching is a separate question
Mangal Dosh is not one of the eight koots. It neither adds to the thirty-six nor takes from them. It is counted separately in each chart: Mangal in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the lagna, and in many readings from the Moon and from Shukra as well. The same texts record parihar — Mangal in its own sign or in exaltation, the drishti of Guru, a comparable placement in the other chart. So the question is never only ‘is one of them Manglik’. It is whether the placement applies at all, and whether the two charts together settle it.
Reading both charts whole
After the koots, I read:
- The seventh house and its lord in each chart, with Shukra and Guru, the karakas the tradition reads for marriage.
- The Navamsha of each, which the tradition reads closely for marriage.
- The dashas that will run for both in the first years after the wedding.
- The strength of the Moon itself in each chart, since all thirty-six points rest on it.
None of this produces a second number. It produces a reading: where the two lives are likely to meet easily, and where strain is likely to sit.
How a matching sitting runs
- Both families send three details for each person: date, time and place of birth, with the source of each time.
- I prepare both charts and check them. If a lagna sits on the boundary of two signs, I say so before reading.
- I score the eight koots and give the total, koot by koot.
- I examine Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal, with the exceptions the texts record.
- I read the seventh houses, the Navamsha and the dashas of both, and set the number inside that reading.
- Where the tradition indicates a shanti for a particular placement, I say what it is. It is never presented as a condition for the marriage or a guarantee of its outcome.
What matching does not decide
A matching does not tell two people to marry, and it does not forbid them. It cannot promise children, income or long life, and I will not suggest that it can. It does not measure whether two people care for each other, share a language, or can make a household across two cities. When the couple already know each other, the matching still has value — it shows where to be careful — but it is not a court sitting over years they have already lived.
When a birth time is uncertain
Ashtakoot needs the Moon’s nakshatra, and the Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day. So an approximate time rarely changes the thirty-six-point score — unless the Moon was close to the edge of a nakshatra that day, which I check. The lagna, the seventh house and Mangal’s house all need a real time. If one time is uncertain, the honest result is a lunar matching plus a clear list of what cannot yet be read.
In person or online
Matching needs no fire and no samagri — only two charts and an hour of attention. Families in Sultanpur and the nearby districts often come to sit with me in person. Families elsewhere in India, or abroad, send the details on WhatsApp, and we speak by phone or video. Both families may join the same call. Dakshina is spoken on WhatsApp; there is no online payment. The wedding muhurat, if wanted afterwards, is a separate piece of work, chosen for the city where the wedding will be held.
What both families send
- Date of birth of each person.
- Time of birth of each, and its source — certificate, hospital record or memory.
- Place of birth of each, as town or village.
- Any earlier matching score, and which software or astrologer produced it.
- Whether either person has already been called Manglik, and by whom.
Questions people ask
- How many gunas should match for marriage?
- The common rule is at least eighteen out of thirty-six, with higher scores called middling, good or excellent. Treat it as a floor for one method, not a verdict. A score below eighteen does not forbid a marriage, and a high score does not promise a good one. The seventh houses, Mangal, Nadi, Bhakoot and the coming dashas of both charts still have to be read.
- Is Nadi dosh a reason to call off a marriage?
- Not by itself. Nadi dosh means both Moons fall in the same Nadi group, which scores zero of eight. The tradition takes it seriously, and it also records exceptions, such as the same nakshatra in two different signs. I name the dosh, check whether an exception applies, and read it with the rest of both charts. The decision stays with the two families.
- Can Kundli Milan be done online?
- Yes. Matching needs only accurate birth details for both people, not a havan or samagri. Both families send date, time and place of birth on WhatsApp, and we speak by phone or video call — both families can join together. Families near Sultanpur can also sit with me in person. The method and the care taken are the same either way.
- What if one person is Manglik and the other is not?
- First, check whether the placement applies at all. Mangal Dosh is counted from the lagna, and often from the Moon and Shukra, and the texts record parihar such as Mangal in its own sign or exaltation, or the drishti of Guru. A comparable placement in the other chart is one exception among several, not the only one. No text forbids such a marriage.
- Is Kundli Milan needed for a love marriage?
- It is useful, though not as a veto. The thirty-six points still compare the two Moons, and Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal still need to be looked at. For a couple who already know each other, matching shows where strain is likely to sit and where care is needed. It cannot judge years already lived together, and it should not be used to.
