Mangal Dosh Shanti Puja (Manglik Dosh)

Mangal Shanti with sankalp, Mangal japa, havan and daan — advised only after the chart is read whole and the parihar checked.

A Mangal Dosh Shanti — sankalp, Mangal japa, havan and daan — advised after the chart is read. Held at home or in a temple; the reading itself can be online.

What this includes

  • Chart reading: houses, reference point and parihar
  • Sankalp, Gauri–Ganesh pujan and Navagraha avahan
  • Mangal pujan and mantra japa in the fixed count
  • Havan with khadira samidha and purnahuti
  • Daan as the household can give
  • Samagri list on WhatsApp once the date is fixed

Most families who ask me for a Mangal Dosh puja have already been told three things. The son or daughter is Manglik. The marriage cannot go ahead until a puja is done. And sometimes, a Kumbh Vivah must come first. Usually the person who said it looked at one chart, counted from one reference point, and never looked for the parihar the same texts record. Mangal Shanti is an old and proper vidhi. But it is the last step of a careful reading, not the first response to a word. On this page I set out when I actually advise it, how I perform it, and what the family does on the day. What Mangal Dosh is, house by house, is in the Gyaan article on Mangal Dosh.

Reading the chart before any puja

Before a date is fixed, I read the chart whole. Three questions come first.

  1. Is Mangal in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house — and counted from which point: the Lagna, the Moon, or Shukra?
  2. Does a parihar apply? Mangal in Mesh, Vrishchik or Makar. Guru’s drishti on Mangal, or Guru sitting with him. A comparable placement in the other chart, where the question is one of matching.
  3. What is actually being asked? ‘Is there a dosh’ and ‘should this marriage proceed’ are different questions, and the second needs both charts.

Where a parihar plainly applies, I say so. I do not advise a puja to settle what the texts already treat as settled. Where the placement stands and the family wishes to mark it with a vidhi before a marriage, or wants to meet a Mangal mahadasha with a steadier mind, I advise a Mangal Shanti. It is a prayer, not a precondition. No text I rely on makes a wedding depend on it.

Gun Milan is a separate matter. Mangal Dosh is not one of the eight koots, and a Shanti does not change the score out of thirty-six. Families who have been told otherwise should know that before they book anything.

How I perform the Mangal Shanti

This is the order I follow at a home or temple sitting. The order is fixed. The length depends on the japa count fixed at the sankalp.

  1. Sankalp. The yajman states name, gotra, place, tithi and purpose. Before a marriage, the person whose chart is in question sits for it, with a parent beside them if they wish.
  2. Gauri–Ganesh pujan, kalash sthapana and punyahavachan — the opening every karma takes, and the purification of the place.
  3. Navagraha avahan. All nine grahas are invoked in the mandal, Mangal in his own place to the south, on red.
  4. Mangal pujan. Shodashopachar worship, with red flowers, red sandal and red cloth.
  5. Japa. The Vedic mantra beginning ‘agnir murdha divah kakut’, or the Pauranik dhyana ‘dharanigarbha sambhutam’, in the count fixed at the sankalp. Where the count is large, it is shared among ritviks or completed across several Tuesdays.
  6. Havan. A tenth of the japa is offered as aahuti, with khadira — khair — as Mangal’s samidha.
  7. Purnahuti, aarti and daan. Masoor dal, copper, red cloth and gur, as the house can give.

Some families add a Hanuman puja or a Sundarkand path on the same day, since Tuesday is his day too. Where that is the family’s custom, I keep it. The Shanti is complete without it.

A Mangal Shanti does not move Mangal. It steadies the mind that carries the decision.

What the family arranges, and what I bring

I bring the paddhati: the sankalp in its proper form, the mantras, the count and the order. The family arranges the place and the people. The full samagri list comes on WhatsApp once the date is fixed, so that nothing is bought twice and nothing is missing on the morning.

  • A clean room, terrace or courtyard where a small havan kund can burn safely, or the temple’s permission if it is held there.
  • The person for whom the Shanti is done, present for the sankalp and the purnahuti, and fasting until then if health allows.
  • Parents or elders, where possible. The sankalp names the family.
  • The daan, chosen by the household. The measure is sincerity, not a catalogue.
  • Simple prasad and a meal for those present, if the family wishes.

Choosing the day

Mangalwar is Mangal’s weekday. Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishtha are his nakshatras. I take the tithi from the Panchang for the place where the family will sit, and I avoid days the Panchang marks unfit for a shanti karma. Before a wedding, the Shanti is best held some days or weeks ahead of the vivah muhurat, not squeezed into the wedding week because someone raised the word late. I do not publish lists of ‘Mangal Shanti dates’. The day is chosen for one chart and one household.

Kumbh Vivah and similar customs

Families sometimes ask whether a Kumbh Vivah or a symbolic marriage to a tree must be done instead. These are regional folk customs, not vidhis with broad shastric standing. Where a family keeps one as its own custom, I respect it. I do not tell anyone that a marriage cannot happen without it.

How it is held

  • At home or in a temple in Sultanpur and the nearby districts — Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh and Lucknow.
  • Further afield in India, with travel arranged well in advance.
  • The reading — whether the dosh applies at all — can be done by video call or WhatsApp, for families in other cities and abroad.
  • For a family abroad that cannot come, the japa can be performed in India on their behalf, with the sankalp taken in their names, and they can join by video. The havan is lit here, by hands that are present. I do not call that an online puja.

Ujjain, where the Mangalnath temple is held by tradition to be Mangal’s birthplace, is the kshetra most associated with this Shanti. Families who wish to go there may. A careful Shanti at home is not a lesser one.

What I need from the family

Date, time and place of birth for the person concerned, and for the other person where the question is matching. The source of the birth time, and how certain it is. Any earlier report, and which reference point it used. Mangal’s house follows the Lagna, and the Lagna moves every two hours or so, so a rounded birth time can create a dosh that is not there.

If the worry behind the visit is health — an injury, blood pressure, a surgery — the doctor comes first. A Shanti sits alongside medical care, never instead of it.

Questions people ask

Is Mangal Dosh puja necessary before marriage?
No text I rely on makes a marriage depend on it. First the chart is read: which house Mangal occupies, from which reference point, and whether a parihar such as Guru’s drishti or Mangal in his own sign already settles it. Where the placement stands and the family wishes to mark it, a Shanti is advised as a prayer before the wedding, not as a condition for it.
Can Mangal Dosh puja be done online?
The reading can, by video call or WhatsApp. For a family abroad that cannot travel, the Mangal japa can be performed in India on their behalf, with the sankalp taken in their names, and they can watch and join by video. The havan, though, is a fire lit here by people who are present. I describe that honestly as a puja done for them in India, not an online puja.
Which day is best for Mangal Dosh Shanti?
Tuesday is Mangal’s weekday, and Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishtha are his nakshatras. Within that, the tithi is taken from the Panchang for the place where the family will sit. Before a marriage, I prefer the Shanti some days or weeks ahead of the vivah muhurat, so it is not rushed into the wedding week.
Does Mangal Dosh end after the age of 28?
A widely cited traditional view holds that the placement carries less weight after about twenty-eight. It is a mitigating consideration, not a rule that switches the dosh off on a birthday. I weigh it alongside the house, the reference point, the other parihar and the second chart, and I tell the family plainly how much it changes in their case.
Will the puja remove Mangal Dosh?
The word the tradition uses is shanti — settling — not removal. A birth chart records a moment that has already happened, and no vidhi edits it afterwards. The Shanti is an act of prayer and composure for the person and the family. I do not offer it with any promise about a marriage, its timing or its outcome.
