Diwali puja in a Delhi home 2026 — Sunday 8 November, one city’s sky

Diwali in a Delhi home is the Kartik Amavasya evening, kept after the sun has actually left this sky. People arrive at it already told three things. The muhurat printed for Mumbai will do if you subtract a little. A society group message is the panchang. And the puja ‘works’ in proportion to what was bought on Dhanteras. None of those is the evening I mean. The date is one. The minute belongs to New Delhi. The rite is a lamp, a clean threshold, and a house that eats together. It is not a contract with wealth.

I am writing this on 22 October 2026, from Sultanpur. I do not keep a room in Delhi. Families write from Dwarka, Rohini, Laxmi Nagar, CR Park, Karol Bagh and the builder floors of south Delhi asking whether Sunday is the night, whether the oil bath is the same morning, and whether Jaipur’s later window can be borrowed because a cousin forwarded it. On the working sheet I use, Lakshmi Puja is Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November. The small-lamp evening many houses call Chhoti Diwali sits on Saturday 7 November, while the oil bath tied to Naraka Chaturdashi falls before sunrise on Sunday the 8th, because that tithi is long enough to touch two dawns. Govardhan Puja is Tuesday 10 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November. Write those five lines on one paper. Do not let a reel collapse them into ‘Diwali weekend’.

The Delhi window, said as a working figure

For New Delhi, the working Lakshmi Puja window I am willing to print in October is about 5:54 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. IST on Sunday 8 November, inside pradosh kaal after sunset, which that evening is near 5:31 p.m. Amavasya on this sheet begins late morning on the 8th, about 11:28 a.m., and runs into the afternoon of the 9th. That is why the puja is Sunday night and not Monday. Confirm it on Sunday morning with one panchang set to New Delhi. A minute I type today is not a muhurat carved in stone. Gurgaon and Noida are close, not identical. If you sleep in Noida and the thali is there, use Noida. If the puja is in your parents’ flat in Delhi, use Delhi.

Jaipur’s window that same night sits later, near 6:03 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the working figures, because the sun leaves a little after it leaves Delhi. A separate article on this site is that courtyard. Do not paste Jaipur’s times into a Dwarka balcony, and do not paste Dubai’s Gulf clock here either. Delhi is IST. The sky is the sky outside your window.

What the week actually is, in a flat

Friday 6 November, Dhanteras. In Delhi the working puja stretch is about 6:02 p.m. to 7:57 p.m. Clean the entrance. A new utensil is enough if gold is a story someone else is selling. Light a small lamp for Yama after the evening puja, facing the south of the house as your elders do, and keep it small. A high-rise detector does not care about a reel. A clay cup, a short wick, away from curtains.

Saturday 7 November is not yet Lakshmi’s night in the houses I sit with. Some families light a few diyas and call it Chhoti Diwali. Keep it quiet. The main account is Sunday.

Sunday 8 November. If your house keeps the oil bath, it is before sunrise, not during the evening muhurat. Then the day is ordinary until dusk. Sweep. Fill ghee or oil. Soak the wicks. Decide who sits. The puja itself, in the ordinary north-Indian house, is Ganesha, then Lakshmi, a lamp, water, flowers, a sweet, and the door left fit for a guest. I will not give you a sixteen-step script from a pamphlet. If your mother has a sequence, use hers. If she does not, sit, light, offer, and eat.

Tuesday 10 November is Govardhan, a different sankalp. Wednesday 11 November is Bhai Dooj. Do not perform all three on Sunday because the market is shut on Monday.

The building is part of the rite

A Delhi flat has a corridor, a neighbour, and often a residents’ group. Many buildings ask that fireworks stay short, or that they not be lit at all. Read your own building’s note. I will not pretend there is one law for every colony, and I will not tell you that a cracker is what makes the puja complete. The lamp is the puja. A child near a firework is not a proof of celebration. If someone is burned, that is a hospital matter, not a priest’s matter.

The smoke detector is also part of the evening, whether the paddhati names it or not. Several small diyas beat one tall flame lit for a photograph. Keep them on a metal plate, away from the curtain that moves when the balcony door is open. If the building forbids open fire, use the lamps it allows and do not become a story in the lift.

Rangoli in a 3-by-4-metre hall can be a small rice pattern by the shoe rack. It does not need to block the neighbour’s door. The threshold you are lighting is yours.

What I will not sell you

Lakshmi is not a return on what you spent in Karol Bagh or at a mall in Saket. A silver coin on the thali is a sign the house uses. It is not an investment note. I will not promise a job, a flat, a visa, or a year without debt because the muhurat was ‘hit’. I will not rank a business family above a salaried one. The evening is the same size in a servant quarter and in a builder floor if the lamp is lit with attention.

CR Park and other Bengali houses in Delhi often keep Kali Puja on this Amavasya, not the Lakshmi sequence of a Purvanchali flat. That is their night. Do not correct it with a north-Indian reel. If you are a guest there, ask what time they sit. If your own house is Lakshmi’s, stay with Lakshmi.

How a reading from Sultanpur reaches a Delhi flat

You do not need me in the room. A person who knows the lamp can keep the night. If you want the muhurat read against New Delhi because a train, a society booking or a parent’s health is sitting on the same Sunday, write on WhatsApp and name the colony. There is no online payment. Dakshina, if a live reading is arranged, is spoken before the day. I am in Sultanpur. I travel when a date is truly fixed. I sit in India when the family comes. A live link is the form that matches a flat I will not pretend to enter.

Questions people ask

When is Diwali 2026 in Delhi?

Lakshmi Puja is Sunday 8 November 2026, after sunset. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November. Govardhan is Tuesday 10 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November.

What time is the Lakshmi Puja in Delhi?

The working window I print is about 5:54 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. IST. Confirm it on a New Delhi panchang that morning. Do not use Jaipur’s later time.

Is the oil bath on Saturday or Sunday?

In 2026 the tithi touches two dawns. Many houses bathe before sunrise on Sunday 8 November and keep the lamps on Sunday evening. Ask your elders which dawn they have always used, and do not change it at 5 a.m.

Can we do the puja on Monday if Sunday is crowded?

Amavasya’s evening for this puja is Sunday. Monday is a different tithi by the time pradosh returns. Keep Sunday.

Do we need a pandit in the flat?

No. If you want the time read for your colony, ask on WhatsApp. The lamp is the house’s.
