Sharad Navratri 2026 — nine nights, nine forms, and what a household actually keeps

Published: 3 September 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 6 min read

Sharad Navratri is the autumn nine nights of the Devi, in the bright fortnight of Ashvina. In 2026, on the panchang I am using as the working calendar, it begins Sunday, 11 October, with Ghatasthapana in the morning, and the Navami falls on 19 October. Vijayadashami — Dussehra — is Tuesday, 20 October. Some older listings still print an earlier October window; tithi can shift a civil date by a day depending on sunrise and the moment Pratipada begins. For a household, the rule is the same as Janmashtami: pick one panchang on day one, and do not change it on day five because a second website looked nicer.

I am writing this a month out, because Navratri is the festival families search from abroad with the most confusion — nine colours, nine names, garba in one state, pandals in another, kanya puja, fasting, and a heap of 'wear this colour or the day is wasted'. The Devi Mahatmya does not contain a colour chart. It contains a battle in three episodes, read over nine nights. A house that lights a kalash, recites even a little, and feeds a child on Ashtami has kept more of that book than a house that bought nine outfits and no lamp.

2026, day by day, without the costume list

Day 1, 11 October — Pratipada, Ghatasthapana, Shailaputri. The kalash is set: water, a coconut, mango leaves if you have them, soil and barley in a pan if the family grows javara. This is the first act. If you miss the morning window, do not skip the whole Navratri. Set the kalash the same evening and continue.

Day 2, 12 October — Brahmacharini. Day 3, 13 October — Chandraghanta. Day 4, 14 October — Kushmanda. Day 5, 15 October — Skandamata. Day 6, 16 October — Katyayani. Day 7, 17 October — Kalaratri, and in Bengal the Saptami of Durga Puja with nabapatrika. Day 8, 18 October — Mahagauri, Maha Ashtami, the sandhi between Ashtami and Navami in many Bengali households, kanya puja in much of the north. Day 9, 19 October — Siddhidatri, Navami. Day 10, 20 October — Dashami, visarjan of the pandal murti, the burning of Ravana where that is the local form, the crossing of the border back into ordinary time.

The nine names are nine faces of one Devi in the later Navadurga lists. They are a memory aid for nine nights, not nine separate goddesses who will be offended if you wore the wrong dupatta. I will not publish a shopping list and call it vidhi.

Ghatasthapana is the festival starting

Without the kalash, the nine nights have no seat in the house. Place it in the north-east if the house already uses that corner, otherwise a clean raised place that will not be kicked. The water is changed or at least not allowed to smell. The lamp beside it is the same lamp of any vrata — ghee or oil, not a scented candle bought for photographs. Barley in a clay dish, kept moist, is the javara many North Indian homes grow; it is cut on Dashami. If you cannot grow barley in a rented flat, you have not failed Navratri. You have skipped a regional custom. Light the lamp.

Two Navratris, and why this one is the public one

Chaitra Navratri in spring is the other major nine nights, ending at Ram Navami. Sharad Navratri in autumn is the one the country sees: Gujarat's garba and dandiya, Bengal's Durga Puja pandals, the Hindi belt's Ramlila, Mysore's Dasara. They share a fortnight of the Devi. They do not share a single rite. A Gujarati night of garba is not a failed Durga Puja. A Kolkata pandal is not a failed kalash. Families who have married across regions should keep the form the house can actually finish, and visit the other as guests, not as inspectors.

The vrat, said without cruelty

A Navratri vrat may be fruit, one satvik meal, or a full fast on Ashtami and Navami only. The Devi Mahatmya does not award marks for fainting. People with diabetes, pregnancy, or heavy physical work should eat. Kanya puja on Ashtami — inviting girls, washing feet, feeding them — is a household act of honouring the Devi as child. It is not a talent show, and it is not a bribe for a wish. If no kanya is available, offer the food at the kalash and feed whoever is hungry in the house. The hungry are not a lesser Devi.

Garba, Durga Puja, Ramlila — one fortnight

Garba is circular dance around a lamp or a garbo, nine nights, Gujarat and now every city that has a Gujarati street. Durga Puja is the Bengali bringing of Durga, with Bodhon, Saptami, Ashtami sandhi, Navami, and Dashami visarjan. Ramlila is the Hindi-belt play of Rama's war, ending when Ravana burns on Dashami. Jyotish has nothing to add to which of these is 'correct'. They are three public languages for the same nine nights of Shakti and the victory that Dashami names. Attend the one you know. Do not correct the drummer.

What Navratri is not, in my work

It is not a nine-day discount on every sankalp you postponed. It is not a substitute for a matching, a katha date, or a medical decision. Some families ask me to 'do something in Navratri' for a dasha they fear. A recitation of the Devi Mahatmya, or even one adhyaya a night, is a proper use of the fortnight. A promise that the recitation will cancel Saturn is not. I will sit with the recitation. I will not sell the cancellation.

Sandhi puja, at the join of Ashtami and Navami, is the hour Bengali households treat as the sharpest. It is timed from the local tithi, not from a television clock. If you are not in that tradition, do not invent a sandhi because it sounded powerful. Keep Ashtami's kanya puja, or keep the kalash. Completeness beats borrowed intensity.

A household nine nights that will actually happen

  • 11 October morning: kalash, lamp, a short sankalp, barley if you can.
  • Each evening: lamp, a few names of the Devi, or one page of the Devi Mahatmya, or a recording if the house is exhausted.
  • Ashtami, 18 October: kanya puja or a meal for children in the house; those who fast, parana as the family already does.
  • Navami, 19 October: last evening at the kalash.
  • Dashami, 20 October: visarjan of a small murti if you installed one; cutting of javara; the kalash water on a plant; Ravana only if that is already your town's form.

Questions that will arrive in October

When is Navratri 2026?

Sharad Navratri, on the working panchang I am using: 11 to 19 October, Dussehra 20 October. If your family priest prints a day earlier or later, follow him for the whole nine, not half and half.

Must we wear nine colours?

No. That is a recent bazaar custom. A clean garment and a lamp will do.

Can we keep Navratri abroad without a pandal?

Yes. Kalash, lamp, one recitation, kanya puja if children are in the house. The Devi is not waiting for a municipal permit.

Does Navratri puja change a chart?

No. A chart is a birth. Nine nights can change how a household sits with fear. That is not a small thing, and it is not a rewritten lagna.

Garba during a death in the family?

If the house is in ashaucha, the public garba can wait; the lamp at home can still be lit without a party. Ask the elder who already runs the mourning, not a poster.
