Dhanteras in a Delhi home 2026 — Friday 6 November, the lamp not the shop

Published: 24 October 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 7 min read

Dhanteras in a Delhi home is the Trayodashi of the dark fortnight before Kartik Amavasya. Families reach it already convinced of three things. The day is a gold purchase, and without a bill the year is insecure. The muhurat can be taken from a Jaipur forward because both cities share a clock. And the lamp is optional once the shopping bag is in the lift. None of that is the evening. Friday 6 November 2026 is the date. The minute belongs to New Delhi. The rite is a clean threshold, something new and useful for the house, Lakshmi and Kubera named without a promise, and a small lamp for Yama after the puja.

I am writing this on 24 October 2026, from Sultanpur. I do not keep a flat in Delhi. People write from Dwarka, Rohini, Mayur Vihar, Karol Bagh and the societies along the Dwarka Expressway asking what to buy, whether they may sit at 9 p.m. after the office, and whether Sunday’s Lakshmi Puja can be pulled forward into Friday because relatives are leaving town. A separate article on this site is that Sunday, 8 November, in a Delhi flat. This page is only Friday. Do not fold them together because the market calls the whole week Diwali.

The date and the Delhi window

On the working panchang I use, Dhanteras is Friday 6 November 2026. Trayodashi begins about 10:30 a.m. IST that morning and runs until about 10:47 a.m. on Saturday 7 November. The puja is not at noon because the tithi has started. It is in pradosh, after sunset. For New Delhi the working puja stretch is about 6:02 p.m. to 7:57 p.m. IST, inside a pradosh that runs roughly 5:33 p.m. to 8:09 p.m. Sunset that evening is near 5:33 p.m. I print these as working figures checked against the sheets families already circulate. On Friday morning open one panchang set to New Delhi and keep that sheet. Gurgaon and Noida are a few minutes off. Use the city where the lamp will stand.

Jaipur’s stretch the same evening sits later, about 6:11 p.m. to 8:07 p.m. on the working figures. A separate article on this site is that doorway. Do not start a Dwarka puja because a cousin in the walled city has texted that they have sat down. Delhi is not late. Jaipur is later. Both are IST. The sun is not.

Friday is a work day

6 November 2026 is a Friday. Offices, schools and the Metro are running. The Indian picture of a mother at home from morning, polishing a thali, does not survive a Nehru Place shift or a school run in Pitampura. Lay the plate on Thursday night. Decide the vessel before you leave the house. The puja cannot begin at 9:30 because a meeting ran long and still be called the muhurat. If you will miss 6:02, leave the office in time to be home before sunset, or keep the lamp with someone who is already home and join them for the offering, not for a second puja invented at 10 p.m.

Eat before you sit if the body needs it. This is not a nirjala vrat unless your own house has always kept it that way. A pregnant woman, a person who is ill, a person whose physician has said not to fast, eats. Standing in a Chandni Chowk lane without water is not devotion.

What is bought, and what is not the puja

The older habit is to bring home something metal and useful: a lota, a plate, a spoon, a small silver coin set on the thali. Gold is what the market shouts. It is not what makes Trayodashi valid. If the house can buy a utensil without debt, buy the utensil. If it cannot, a coin already in the drawer, washed and placed on the plate, is enough. I will not tell you that metal bought on this day returns as income. I will not tell you that skipping the shop brings loss. Fear is the sales pitch. The rite is the lamp.

Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar and the malls will be full. Go on Thursday if you must buy, or early Friday, and be home before the sky turns. A purchase at 8:30 p.m. is a purchase. It is not a muhurat. Do not keep the family hungry in traffic so that a bill can be dated inside a window you have already missed.

The lamp, including Yama’s

In the ordinary house the evening is Ganesha, Lakshmi, and Kubera named beside her, a diya, water, a flower, and the new vessel kept where it will actually be used next week, not sealed in a box for a photograph. Then a second, smaller lamp — the Yama Deepam — is lit once the puja is done, towards the south, and left to burn quietly. It is not a bonfire on the balcony. In a Delhi flat the smoke detector is part of the paddhati whether the books say so or not. One clay cup, a short wick, on a metal plate, away from the curtain. If the building has forbidden open flame, use the lamp the building allows. Do not become a notice in the lift.

Many societies ask residents to keep the corridor clear and the flame inside the flat. Read your own group’s note. I will not invent one rule for every colony in Delhi.

What Friday is not

Friday is not Lakshmi Puja. That is Sunday 8 November, and its Delhi window is a different article. Friday is not Govardhan, which is Tuesday 10 November, and not Bhai Dooj, Wednesday 11 November. Saturday 7 November carries, for many houses, only a few small lamps in the evening. The oil bath tied to Naraka Chaturdashi falls before sunrise on Sunday, because that tithi is long. Do not perform Sunday’s puja on Friday to ‘finish Diwali’ before a flight.

Kubera on the thali is not a target for the year’s salary. A new car, a new phone, a new loan dressed as a Dhanteras purchase — none of these is required, and none of them is blessed into safety by the minute. If you are buying something large, buy it because the house decided on a Tuesday in October, not because a shop painted the date on the glass.

If you want the time read

You do not need a pandit in the flat. If you want Friday’s window read against New Delhi because a parent is travelling or the society has booked the hall, write on WhatsApp and name the colony. There is no online payment. Dakshina, if any, is spoken before the day. I am in Sultanpur. I travel when a date is fixed. I sit in India when the family comes. A live link is enough for a lota and a lamp.

Questions people ask

When is Dhanteras in Delhi in 2026?

Friday 6 November 2026. The working puja window is about 6:02 p.m. to 7:57 p.m. IST. Confirm a New Delhi panchang that morning.

Do we have to buy gold?

No. A useful metal vessel, or a coin already at home, is the older habit. Gold is a market custom. It is not the rite, and it is not a promise of wealth.

Can we use Jaipur’s time?

No. Jaipur sits later the same evening. A separate article on this site is that doorway. Your lamp is in Delhi.

What is the Yama lamp?

A small diya lit after the puja, towards the south, left to burn quietly. It is not a large flame and it is not a substitute for the puja itself.

Is Dhanteras the main Diwali puja?

No. Lakshmi Puja of the Amavasya is Sunday 8 November. Friday opens the week. It does not finish it.
