Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 — sthapana, the ten days, and visarjan without the noise

Published: 3 September 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 7 min read
Ganesh Chaturthi is the sthapana of Ganesha in the house or the mandal, on the Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada, and the visarjan that follows — on the same day for many homes, on Anant Chaturdashi for the public festival. In 2026 the Chaturthi is Monday, 14 September. Anant Chaturdashi, when the large murtis of Maharashtra and the public pandals go to water, is Friday, 25 September. Between those two dates sit ten days that a family can keep quietly, or that a street can keep as a civic event. Both are the same festival only if the murti was welcomed as a guest and is returned as a guest. Loudspeakers and a river full of plaster are not the shastra.
I am writing this eleven days before sthapana, because that is when the questions are useful: which clay, which direction, can a working household keep ten days, is a one-day visarjan lesser, and does Ganesha 'remove obstacles' as a slogan or as a sankalp. The answers below are for a home. A mandal has its own committee. A jyotishi is not that committee.
The 2026 dates
Sthapana: Monday, 14 September 2026, Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada. The muhurat for bringing the murti in is taken from the local panchang for that morning — generally after sunrise, avoiding the times the panchang marks as inauspicious for that city, not 'whenever the sculptor delivers'. If the murti arrives late, sit it down, offer water and durva, and complete the formal sthapana at the next clean window. Do not perform a rushed pran-pratishtha in a traffic jam of relatives.
Visarjan for a one-and-a-half-day or three-day household murti can be the same evening or on the third, fifth or seventh day, as the family decided at sankalp. The public visarjan, and the one most search results mean, is Anant Chaturdashi: 25 September 2026. Hartalika Teej falls on the same civil date as Chaturthi this year, 14 September. They are different vratas. Do not merge the sankalps.
Who Ganesha is in this festival
Ganesha is worshipped at the start of work — vidya, a journey, a marriage, a katha — because the tradition names him the remover of the obstacle that is confusion at the threshold. The Puranic birth, the elephant head, the broken tusk, the mouse, the modak, are the iconography of that office. Chaturthi is his jayanti as the household keeps it: the son of Parvati, welcomed for a fixed stay, fed, sung to, and then walked to water so the house does not pretend the guest is furniture.
He is not a mascot for a housing society. A visarjan procession that blocks ambulances, or a murti so large it cannot be immersed without a crane and a police band, has left the grammar of a guest. I will say this plainly because every year the same photographs arrive after the festival, of lakes with paint on them. That is not bhakti that went slightly wrong. That is a civic mess with a tilak on it.
Clay, not plaster
A household murti should be clay — shaadu, if you can get it — painted with natural colour if painted at all, small enough that two people can lift it. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve. It sits on the bed of the pond with the paint. Many cities now require clay and have designated tanks. Use them. A bucket visarjan in a tub at home, the water then poured on a plant, is a complete visarjan for a small murti. It is not a lesser rite. It is the rite scaled to an apartment.
Durva grass, red hibiscus or marigold, and modak are the offerings that belong to him in the lists I was taught. Twenty-one modaks are a number some families keep; one plate made sincerely is better than twenty-one ordered and uneaten. Ganesha is not counted by the bakery bill.
Sthapana in a house that also has to go to work
Face the murti east or west, on a raised chowki, not on the floor, not under a beam if the house already avoids that. Kalash, mango leaves if you have them, a lamp that can be kept through the stay without becoming a fire hazard. Morning and evening aarti are enough for a working family. The 'ten days of continuous programme' is a mandal's job. A house that lights the lamp twice a day, offers fruit, and sits for ten minutes has kept Chaturthi.
If you cannot keep ten days, keep one and a half — sthapana on the 14th after sunrise, visarjan the next evening — and say so in the sankalp. The shastra of a guest includes the honesty of the dates you named when you invited him.
The Chaturthi vrat
Those who keep the Chaturthi vrat fast until moonrise, then offer arghya to the Moon and eat. Ganesha's Chaturthi and the monthly Sankashti are cousins, not twins; do not import Sankashti rules onto the jayanti without checking what your family already does. The ill, the pregnant, children, and anyone whose work involves heavy machinery should not be shamed into a waterless day. Offer the modak, keep the lamp, go to work. The obstacle Ganesha is asked to remove is rarely a skipped lunch.
What visarjan is for
Visarjan is the return of the invited form to the element from which clay came. The singing on the way is farewell, not a rally. In a city with a tank, use the tank. In a city without one, the tub-and-plant method. Do not leave the murti on a beach at low tide for the next morning's photographs. Do not put plaster into a river and call it an offering to Ganga. Ganga is not a drain for our piety.
After visarjan the chowki is emptied, the lamp moved back to the ordinary shrine, the house returned to its week. The guest has left. That emptiness is part of the vidhi. Filling it immediately with shopping is a different festival.
Jyotish, without slogans
Ganesha is invoked at the head of a sankalp I take for a katha or a puja. That is the office. Chaturthi is not a blanket muhurat for signing a contract, buying a vehicle, or filing a case. If you want a muhurat, bring the chart and the work. 'Ganesh is the remover of obstacles, so this Tuesday is fine' is not a reading. It is a proverb wearing a dhoti.
What the ten days do support, without a kundli, is the beginning of study, a child's first letters, the clearing of a neglected shrine, the decision to keep a lamp at dawn for a week. Those are thresholds. They fit him.
A household vidhi that finishes
- 14 September, after the local morning window: snana, chowki, murti, durva, lamp, modak, sankalp naming the days of stay.
- Twice daily aarti, fruit or cooked satvik bhog, the lamp not left beside curtains.
- If ten days: Anant Chaturdashi, 25 September, visarjan in clay-legal water or a home tank.
- If one and a half or three days: visarjan on the evening named in the sankalp, same method.
- After visarjan: clean the chowki, thank the guest aloud, cook an ordinary meal.
Questions this fortnight
When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2026?
Monday, 14 September. Public visarjan with Anant Chaturdashi is Friday, 25 September.
Must we keep the murti ten days?
No. Name the stay at sthapana. One and a half, three, five, seven or ten are all used. Honesty of the named stay matters more than matching a mandal.
Is home visarjan valid?
Yes, for a small clay murti. Water onto a plant after the murti has softened is complete. Plaster in a river is not better because it was 'public'.
Can Chaturthi puja start a business?
It can be the day you take Ganesha's name at the start of work. It is not, by itself, a muhurat. For a muhurat, the chart and the panchang of that work are required.
We live abroad and cannot immerse in a river.
A clay murti, a large bowl, a plant. That is the visarjan of an apartment, and it is enough.
