Shrimad Bhagwat Katha — seven days, three, or one, and how a house fixes it

Published: 24 October 2026 · Acharya Krishna Kant Shrimukh Shandilya Ji Maharaj · 8 min read

A Shrimad Bhagwat Katha gets stuck in a family long before the first shloka. Someone has said seven days or it does not count. Someone else has said a vachak must be flown in, or the katha is only real in a temple town. A third person has already named a phal: pitra will be at peace, a wish will be granted, a house will be protected. I am writing this on 24 October 2026, from Sultanpur, where I sit the Vyas Peeth. The Puran is a hearing. It is not a machine. The problem I actually get on the phone is smaller and more useful: the house wants the katha and cannot see which length, which room, and which week it can finish.

If that is your house, write on WhatsApp in one message. The city where the peeth will stand. Home, courtyard, terrace, or a hall. How many mornings the family can truly be present — seven, three, or one. A rough month, not a pretend muhurat. Hindi is the language I recite in. I am in Sultanpur. There is no fee on this page. Dakshina is spoken before the date is fixed. Nothing here promises a result.

What people have already been told

Seven days is the saptah: the Bhagwat Puran taken in order, a sankalp on the first morning, prasad at the close of each sitting, and on the seventh day the conclusion people expect, with a havan if the house can hold a fire. That shape is old and it is good. It is not the only proper shape. A three-day katha is recited in houses that cannot empty a week. A single day, often the tenth skandha, is recited where even three mornings will not gather. I have sat all three. I do not rank the shortest as a failed saptah. I rank a seven-day plan that collapses on day four as the failure, because the hearing was promised and then abandoned.

A separate article on this site is the preparation of a home saptah: the peeth, the seating, the bhandara. Another is how a Gulf flat holds the same niyam when the weekend is Friday and Saturday. This page is the decision that comes before either of those. If you do not yet know the room, the samagri list will only make you tired.

Choose the length the house can finish

Count the people who will actually sit, not the people who will be invited. A saptah needs a host who can be in the house each morning, a place the sound will not become a fight with the neighbour, and a kitchen that can manage prasad without turning the women of the house into a caterer they did not agree to be. If the host works a shift that cannot move, do not book seven weekdays and then ask the vachak to start at nine at night. Night can be kept. Pretending it is the classical morning saptah cannot.

Three days suits a long weekend, a courtyard that can be cleared twice more after the first day, and a family that wants more than one skandha and less than a week of leave. One day suits a shraddha anniversary, a griha pravesh week, or a house that has never held a katha and should not begin by exhausting itself. The tenth skandha on its own is Krishna’s lila. It is not a cheat. Say in the sankalp what you are hearing. Do not say saptah if you are sitting once.

I will not tell you that seven days grants more phal than one. That arithmetic is how katha is sold. The hearing is the hearing. A quiet single morning with twenty people who stay is a katha. A noisy seven days that the host resents by Wednesday is a programme. Choose before you call me, or call me and we will choose from the days you truly have. Do not let a relative choose seven because it sounds larger.

The date is the house’s week, then the tithi

Bhagwat is not tied to one civil date the way Dussehra is. Families still want a ‘right’ month. Chaturmas is traditionally a season of hearing. A death anniversary, a parent’s wish, the first year in a new house: these are ordinary reasons and they are enough. I will look at a short list of weeks you can actually host. I will not invent a muhurat inside a weekend the hall has discounted and then call it the Puran’s choice. If the fire of a havan is not allowed in the building, we do not pretend the seventh day must have one. The conclusion can be a lamp and food. Completeness is finishing what the sankalp named.

The city of the peeth is the city of the clock. A family in Delhi does not take a Jaipur sunrise. A family in Dubai does not subtract ninety minutes from Sultanpur and call it Gulf time. Name the city in the first line. If the vachak is to travel, the travel is arranged when the week is fixed. It is not promised on a page, and it is not the only form. I also sit in India when the family comes, and I sit by a live link when the peeth is in another house and the voice can still be in the room. Many saptahs are in person. Some are not. The niyam is the recitation and the sankalp, not the airline.

What the first morning needs

A low seat, a cloth, the book, a kalash, a lamp, and the names that will be spoken in the sankalp. The host, or the person the host names, takes the sankalp before the recitation. I need those names written, and the relationship if it is a shraddha or a wish spoken for someone who is not in the room. I do not need a life story. I do not need the neighbour’s opinion. Prasad is what the kitchen can finish each day. A bhandara on the last day is food for the people who came, not a contest. If the house cannot feed a crowd, do not invite a crowd. Twenty people fed is a bhandara. Two hundred people announced and then short of food is a trouble you made.

Sound matters more than decoration. A microphone that howls will empty the courtyard faster than a plain voice. Test it the evening before. In a flat, tell the floor above and the floor below which hours you will sit. Courtesy is part of the host’s niyam. A katha that begins with a fight about noise has already left the text.

When the length and the month are even roughly known, write them. WhatsApp, Hindi or a simple English line, with the city. ‘Seven mornings in the courtyard at Sultanpur, any week after 15 November’ is a booking conversation. ‘We want Bhagwat, please quote’ is not yet one. I will answer the first. I will ask the second for the city and the days. Dakshina is spoken once the shape is clear, before anyone travels or the link is set. There is no online payment.

What the katha will not do

It will not guarantee peace for the dead, a child, a visa, a court case, or a year without debt. If a shraddha is the reason, the names are spoken and the hearing is offered. That is the honour. It is not a contract with the ancestors. If someone has told you the katha removes a dosh, they have used a word I do not use. Shanti settles. A katha is a hearing of the Puran. People may leave quieter. I will not sell that quiet as an outcome you can purchase.

It will also not replace a doctor, a lawyer, or a conversation your family has been avoiding. Do not book seven days to force a relative into the house. Do not book one day as a photograph. The peeth is a seat for recitation. If you want me on it, say so with the days you have.

Questions people ask

Is a one-day Bhagwat a real katha?

Yes, if the sankalp says what is being recited. It is not a failed saptah. A seven-day plan you cannot finish is the weaker form.

Do you have to come to the house?

Travel is one form, when the week is fixed. A sitting in India is another. A live link is the third, when the peeth is in your room and the voice can be heard there. I am based in Sultanpur. A flight is not promised on this page.

What do we write on WhatsApp?

City, home or hall, seven or three or one, and a rough month. Names for the sankalp can follow. Hindi is the recitation.

Is there a fixed price?

No. Dakshina is spoken before the date, after the shape is clear. There is no online payment and no package.

If your house is ready to fix a week

This page is about choosing a Shrimad Bhagwat the house can finish, and then asking for it in one message. I am Acharya Krishna Kant. The katha people associate with this site is the one I recite from Sultanpur, in person when the week allows and by link when the house is elsewhere. Close to twenty years of that sitting is the work behind the name. Send the city and the days on WhatsApp. I will tell you whether that shape can be kept. I will not tell you what the Puran owes you in return.
