Bhai Dooj 2026 — Wednesday 11 November, the tilak is not Diwali’s evening

Bhai Dooj is the morning the sister marks her brother’s forehead and the house eats something sweet. People search it on the night of Diwali, already tired, and they want the time of Sunday’s Lakshmi Puja reused on Wednesday. That reuse is wrong. On the working calendar I follow, Bhai Dooj 2026 is Wednesday 11 November. Govardhan Puja is Tuesday 10 November. Lakshmi Puja was Sunday 8 November. I am writing this on 31 October 2026, from Sultanpur. Wednesday has its own small rite. It does not borrow Sunday’s pradosh, and it does not need a hall.

If the brother and sister are in two cities and you want the morning named for the city where the tilak will actually be put, write on WhatsApp. Name that city. I am in Sultanpur. There is no fee here. The tilak is not a promise of the brother’s long life. I will not sell it as one.

The week, so Wednesday is not swallowed

Dhanteras is Friday 6 November. Diwali night is Sunday 8 November. Govardhan is Tuesday 10 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November. The sister does not wait for sunset. In the ordinary house the tilak is after sunrise, when both can sit, and before the day runs away into offices. Some families wait for a named muhurat later in the morning. Confirm that on Wednesday with a panchang set to the city where the thali is. A Dubai morning is not an Indian morning. A brother in Noida and a sister in Jaipur should use the city of the forehead, not the city of the person watching on a phone.

If a train leaves at dawn, do the tilak the evening before only if your elders have always done a travelling exception, and say so. Do not quietly move the whole rite to Tuesday’s Annakut and call both days complete. Tuesday is Krishna and food. Wednesday is the brother. They can share a kitchen. They should not share a sankalp.

What is on the thali

Roli or a paste of sandal, rice, a lamp, and a sweet the house can finish. That is the thali I see in Sultanpur and in the lanes that write to me. A silver tray from a shop is fine if you already own it. It is not required. The brother sits. The sister applies the tilak, puts rice, and feeds him a bite or a whole plate, as the house has always done. He gives what he gives — a cloth, money, a word — without a rate. I will not print a sum. A printed sum turns a morning into a bill.

The aarti, if you do one, is short. This is not a jagran and not Karwa Chauth. There is no moon to wait for. There is no sieve. Families who mix Bhai Dooj with Karwa because both ‘protect a man’ have mixed two vrats. Karwa was Thursday 29 October, a wife’s fast until the moon. Wednesday is a sister’s tilak in daylight. Leave Karwa in October.

Children can sit and watch. They are not a proof of the rite. A sister who is pregnant or unwell does not fast for this morning unless her own small custom includes a fast and her body can hold it. Eat. The tilak is the rite. Hunger is not.

Distance

Many brothers are not in the house. A video call is a way to see a face. It is a thin tilak. If the sister can mark a brother who is in the room, that is the rite. If nobody is in the room, a call and a sweet eaten at the same hour is a remembrance, and you may call it that honestly. Do not ask me to certify a video as a classical tilak. I will not scold you for living apart. I will not pretend the screen is a forehead.

If you want the morning’s window for a particular city, send the city. I will not give one minute for all of India. Sunrise in Patna is not sunrise in Mumbai. The working habit is after sunrise. The exact muhurat, if your family uses one, belongs to that city’s panchang on Wednesday morning.

What the day will not do

It will not lengthen a life. It will not heal a brother who is ill. It will not replace a doctor. It will not settle a dispute about property. If the brother and sister are not speaking, a tilak done for a photograph can wait. Forcing the morning to look united is not the rite. The rite is for a bond that exists. Where it does not, do not use my name to compel it.

WhatsApp, if you write, needs the city and whether both of you will be in that city. I am in Sultanpur. Dakshina is spoken only if you want a word about the hour before Wednesday, not as a charge for the tilak itself. Most houses do not need me. They need the thali and the morning. The ones who write are the ones split across cities. There is no online payment.

Who puts the mark

The sister does, in the houses I sit with. A cousin who has been counted as a sister in that kitchen since childhood may do it, if the family has always included her and is not inventing her on Wednesday morning for a photograph. A brother’s wife does not stand in for a living sister so the picture looks complete. Where there is no sister at all, the house’s own custom decides. Sometimes a cousin. Sometimes the morning is simply not forced. I will not appoint a substitute so a reel can be posted. Several brothers mean several foreheads, in the order the mother already knows. In most lanes here the eldest sits first. Do not open a quarrel about order on Wednesday morning. The quarrel will outlast the roli.

The mark is roli and rice, or sandal if that is the paste already in the house. A long design from a parlour is decoration. The rite is a clear mark the brother can wear out of the door without becoming a joke at his office. He does not have to keep it on for a counted number of hours. There is no such count. Wash it when the day requires washing. The rice that falls on the table is swept up and put in a plant or in running water if that is your habit. It is not collected as a charm.

What he gives back is the house’s own measure: a cloth, a coin, a meal, a sentence. I will not print a figure, and I will not rank sisters by what they received. A morning that becomes a comparison of envelopes has left the thali. If money is awkward this year, say so before Wednesday, quietly, and give the meal. The meal is enough. A public complaint about the gift is not part of the rite, and I will not write a script for it.

Rakhi was another month

People fold Bhai Dooj into Raksha Bandhan because both belong to sister and brother. Raksha Bandhan sits in Shravana. This morning is Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Wednesday 11 November 2026. The thread was the monsoon month. The tilak is this week. A brother who missed the thread does not make up Rakhi on Wednesday, and a sister who cannot travel in November does not owe a second thread to balance a ledger. If the brother is in a Gulf city, the sunrise that matters is the sunrise on his street. A Delhi muhurat copied into the family group is the wrong morning. I will not subtract ninety minutes from a Sultanpur clock and call the result Dubai. Name his city. If the sister is the one abroad and the brother is in Jaipur, the forehead is in Jaipur, and Jaipur’s Wednesday morning is the one to keep. The person watching on a phone may eat a sweet at the same hour as a remembrance. The phone does not move the city of the mark.

Nepal’s Bhai Tika belongs to Tihar and to Nepal’s own sky. Kathmandu sits further east. Adding fifteen minutes to this Wednesday and calling it Kathmandu is a false sum. If the forehead is in the valley or in the Tarai, say so, and do not take an Indian list as the last word. Bengal’s Bhai Phonta, where a family keeps it, is that family’s own morning and should be read on their panchang, not borrowed from a Sultanpur lane because the sweets look similar. Similar sweets are not the same sankalp.
