Govardhan Puja 2026 — Tuesday 10 November, Annakut, not a second Diwali

Govardhan Puja is the day after the house has already done too much. People search it as a smaller Diwali, or they fold it into Sunday night because the sweets are still on the table. It is neither. On the working calendar I use, Govardhan Puja 2026 is Tuesday 10 November. Lakshmi Puja was Sunday 8 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November. I am writing this on 31 October 2026, from Sultanpur. Tuesday is its own sankalp: Krishna, the hill of food, and in many courtyards a small Govardhan made of cow dung. It is not the Amavasya lamp lit again because Monday was busy.

If you want the day read for your city, or a small sitting named for the house, write on WhatsApp. The city, and whether the puja is at home or in a courtyard. I am in Sultanpur. There is no fee on this page. The food does not buy a year of grain, and I will not say that it does.

Where Tuesday sits in the week

Friday 6 November is Dhanteras. Sunday 8 November is Lakshmi Puja. Tuesday 10 November is Govardhan. Wednesday 11 November is Bhai Dooj. A separate article on this site is the Delhi flat’s Diwali, and another is Jaipur’s courtyard and bahi. Those pages stop at Sunday. This page starts when the lamps of Sunday have gone out and the kitchen is still full. Do not perform Annakut on Sunday night to ‘finish the week’. The tithi of Govardhan is the bright Pratipada, the day after Amavasya’s night. Confirm your city on Tuesday morning. A Delhi screenshot is not a Patna morning, and a Jaipur Annakut in a temple is not your kitchen.

The puja in an ordinary house is in the day, not in Diwali’s pradosh. Cows, if the lane still has them, are fed and honoured. A hill is raised — dung in the village, a mound of rice and sweets where dung is not possible — and food is offered as Annakut, a heap, not a single laddu for a photograph. The heap can be modest. What matters is that it is food the house cooked or honestly bought, offered before anyone makes a meal of it. Leftovers of Sunday arranged into a hill and called Annakut are tired sweets, not a rite.

What the house actually does

Sweep. Draw a small ground if you draw one. Place the hill where feet will not kick it. Light a lamp. Offer the food with the names of the house. In a Jaipur or Braj-touched family the day is larger, and a temple Annakut may be the main act. In a Sultanpur courtyard it is often the family hill and the cows of the lane. Both are Govardhan. Do not copy a temple’s scale into a two-room flat and then feel you have failed. Twenty items on a thali, offered with attention, are an Annakut. A hundred items ordered to impress a group are a catering bill.

Circle the hill if that is your house’s habit, with a story told to the children about Krishna and the mountain. The story is a story. It is not a promise that your roof will hold against a storm because you walked in a circle. I tell it when asked. I do not sell the circle as insurance.

Then the house eats. Govardhan without eating is a display. The offering returns as prasad. Share it with whoever is in the lane and hungry, not only with the people who can praise the arrangement.

What Tuesday is not

It is not Bhai Dooj. The tilak is Wednesday. Sisters who try to finish both on Tuesday because a train leaves at dawn on Wednesday should keep a small tilak on Wednesday morning if they can, and not pretend Tuesday’s Annakut was the brother’s rite. A separate page can carry Bhai Dooj. This one will not swallow it.

It is not a muhurat for a wedding or a griha pravesh merely because the kitchen is already in festival oil. If you need a muhurat, that is a different question, with its own city and its own list of free days. Do not grab Tuesday because the halwai is already paid.

It is not a fast that proves anything. Eat. Children eat. Anyone ill eats. A nirjala vow invented for Govardhan because a reel mixed it with Chhath is a confusion. Chhath is the following week, Friday 13 November through Monday 16 November. Different sankalp, different body of water, different articles of food.

A reading, if the day is tangled

Some houses write because a parent died and they do not know if Annakut is right in a year of mourning. Some write because two cities in the family disagree on the date. Send the city and the doubt in one line. I will not turn a mourning house into a feast they cannot bear, and I will not invent a second Govardhan to please a group chat. One city, one morning, one hill.

WhatsApp is the door. Name the city. Say home or temple. I am in Sultanpur. Travel if a date is fixed and the house has asked. A sitting in India if you come. A live word if the hill is elsewhere and you only need the day confirmed. Dakshina is spoken before, not on a rate card. There is no online payment.

How the hill is fed

In a Sultanpur courtyard the hill is made before anyone plates a meal for themselves. A lamp sits at its foot. Water is offered. Then the food goes on, in the order the kitchen actually finished it: a grain, a pulse, a vegetable, a sweet, a fruit if the market had one that morning. If a cow can be brought to the lane without blocking the road, she is fed before the family sits. A house with no cow has not failed Tuesday. Offer grass where a neighbour keeps one, or let the day be the hill of food alone. Do not hire a calf for a photograph and send it back hungry. The cow is not a prop, and the photograph is not the sankalp.

Fifty-six dishes is a temple phrase, chhappan bhog. A home that cooks eight things and can name them has kept Annakut. A home that orders fifty-six boxes and cannot say what is inside them has kept a caterer. Eat what you offer. What will still be in a box on Wednesday night should not have been bought on Tuesday morning. Prasad that spoils is not honour. Share the rest the same day, with the lane, including the people who did not help you arrange it. A hill that only the hosts eat is a private lunch with a story attached.

Children walk the circle when the courtyard allows a circle. In a flat the circle is a slow walk around the table, once, while someone tells the story. Krishna lifted the hill so the village could stand under it. I tell that as the story of the day. I do not tell it as a promise that your ceiling, your work, or a child’s year will be held up because you walked. The monsoon in the story is a monsoon. Your own rain, your own roof, your own year, remain what they are.

One kitchen, even if the sons are elsewhere

A son in another city often sends money and asks the parents to do Govardhan ‘properly’. The parents’ kitchen is the rite. His transfer is help. It is not a second Annakut celebrated in two places as if both were the original. If he wants his own hill, he makes a small one where he eats, on Tuesday, in daylight, with food he will actually eat. He does not ask his mother to hold the phone over the dung so a group can approve the shape. Approval is not a limb of the puja.

A kitchen outside India uses the Tuesday of the place where the rice is cooked. I will not convert a Delhi afternoon into that kitchen by subtracting an hour and a half and calling the sum a muhurat. Gulf noon is Gulf noon. Nepal’s morning is Nepal’s morning, further east than a Delhi clock plus fifteen minutes. If the only doubt is the civil date, Tuesday 10 November 2026 is the date on the sheet I am using for north India. If the doubt is the sky above a different city, name the city and I will read that morning. The food itself does not need me standing in the courtyard. A tangled date does.

Mourning changes the size, not the honesty. A house in the first year after a death may keep a quiet hill and skip the crowd, the loudspeaker, and the hired display. I will not tell them they have broken Kartik if they cannot bear a feast. I will also not invent a rule that Annakut is forbidden for a year, because that rule is not one I have been given to lay on every family. Ask the elders who have actually sat in that kitchen. If they disagree with each other, send me the city and the year of the death, and I will say what I would keep and what I would leave. I will not sell a substitute rite that promises the parent’s peace in exchange for a larger mound.

Questions people ask

When is Govardhan Puja in 2026?

Tuesday 10 November 2026. Diwali night was Sunday 8 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November. Confirm the morning in your own city.

Is Annakut the same as Diwali?

No. Diwali’s Lakshmi Puja is the Amavasya evening. Annakut is the next day’s offering of food. Do not merge them because the sweets remain.

Must we build a dung hill in a flat?

No. A mound of rice and food is what a flat can hold. The village hill of dung belongs where the house already keeps that form. Do not import it for a photograph.

Does the offering guarantee prosperity?

No. It is food offered and then eaten. It is not a contract for grain, money, or a child’s health.

If Tuesday needs a word from Sultanpur

This page is Govardhan Puja 2026, the hill and the heap of food. I am Acharya Krishna Kant. The work of this site is the sitting I have kept from Sultanpur for close to twenty years. If your city and your kitchen are clear, keep the day. If they are not, send them on WhatsApp. I will not add a phal to the food.
