Griha pravesh muhurat — the possession date is not the hour

Griha pravesh is the hour a family steps into a house and begins to keep a kitchen there. People arrive at it with a possession letter, a forwarded list of ‘best dates’, or a Sunday that is free because the office is shut. They have already been told that any Thursday is safe, that a north-facing door cannot be entered in Kartik, and that the puja itself will raise the value of the flat. I am writing this on 31 October 2026, from Sultanpur. None of those three is a muhurat. A muhurat is a day and a lagna in the city of that door, chosen inside the days you can actually stand there with the people who will live there. The builder’s date is the date the keys may be collected. It is a constraint. It is not the chart.

What the hour actually is

I look at the range you send, not at a national poster. Inside that range I set aside days I would not use for a first entry: amavasya, and, in the school I work with, the rikta tithis when the rest of the day cannot repair them. Schools differ on ashtami and chaturdashi. I will not print one school’s refusals as the law of India. When your range is in front of me I will say which days inside it I would leave, and why, for your city. A weekday alone does not decide it. Friday, Monday, Thursday, and Wednesday are often easy. Sunday is not automatic. Saturday and Tuesday are not automatic refusals. A clean lagna on a Tuesday is more honest than a torn-up Thursday chosen because a list said Thursday.

The nakshatra is one limb. Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati, and the three Uttara nakshatras are the names families have usually heard as friendly to an entry. Bharani, Krittika, Magha, Jyeshtha, and Mula are the names they have been told to fear. A friendly name on a day whose lagna is wrong is still a wrong hour. A feared name is a reason to look twice, not a curse on the flat. I do not throw out a fortnight because one dawn carries a heavy nakshatra.

Then the lagna, which is the part a date-list never has. The moment the foot crosses, the rising sign is the lagna of that city. In the school I use, a fixed sign — Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha — is preferred for that step, with the lagna lord able to do its work, and the eighth not made a dumping ground for malefics. Movable lagnas I usually leave for a first entry. This is a method, not a machine. Rahu kalam is not used for the step. Gulika is not used. A beautiful lagna that falls inside Rahu kalam is late or early. It is not ‘close enough’.

Dates I will not publish

After Diwali, which falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, many families want November or December because the paint is dry and the leave is sanctioned. That rush is understandable. It does not make every day in Margashirsha a griha pravesh. I will not print a list of lucky dates for the country. A list without your door’s city and your real free days is how the wrong house enters on the right-looking evening. Pitru Paksha this year ran from 26 September to 10 October and is already past. I am not banning Kartik by a headline, and I am not blessing every Tuesday after Bhai Dooj.

If Guru or Shukra is asta in the weeks you named, I will say so from the ephemeris when I see the range. I will not paste a combustion calendar here that goes stale and then gets forwarded as scripture. Panchak frightens people into emptying a whole month. Panchak is a short run of lunar days. Some houses avoid starting an entry inside it. Some avoid only particular acts. I will not let a headline evacuate your range before I have looked at it.

Three kinds of entry

A newly built house, entered for the first time, is the strict reading. The door, the kitchen, and the people who will sleep there should be ready enough that the rite is not performed in a shell. Wet paint that makes a havan impossible, a kitchen with no burner, a lock the builder has not handed over: these are reasons to move the day, not to ‘do a small puja’ in the corridor and call it pravesh. The first boiling of milk belongs to a kitchen that can boil milk.

A return after a long absence is a lighter entry. The house already knows you. The hour is still chosen, and it is still the city’s hour, but I do not load it with the fear that belongs to a first crossing. Say how long you were away. Two weeks with the parents is not a griha pravesh. Two years in another city, coming back to live, is.

A house rebuilt after demolition, or re-entered after a heavy repair, sits between those two. Tell me what changed: the door, the kitchen, the roof, or only the paint. Paint does not need a muhurat. A new door and a new kitchen do. A rented flat that you will actually live in is still an entry. I will not shame it for lacking a registry in your name. A hotel room for one night is not an entry, and I will not dress a suitcase as a kalash.

What happens at the door

Once the hour is set, the rite is ordinary and it should stay ordinary. Ganesh, a kalash with water, mango leaves, and a coconut, a lamp, and the names of the house. The threshold is washed. The right foot crosses first. In many houses a vessel of milk is set on the new burner until it rises and spills. That spill means the kitchen has been started. It does not forecast profit, a tenant, or a price. I have watched families stare at the milk as if the height of the foam were a balance sheet. Wipe the stove. Eat something cooked there before the day ends, even if the rest of the furniture is still in the lane.

Vastu puja and a havan, when the family wants them, belong at that house, in that hour, with the people who will live there. Shanti settles the act of entering. It does not correct a bad title, a leaking roof, or a loan. It does not remove a graha from anyone’s kundli. If you also want a chart read, that is a separate sitting. Do not ask the havan to do the kundli’s work. The service I keep for this rite is the puja at the home itself. The hour can be named from Sultanpur. The fire cannot.

The door’s city, not the buyer’s city

A son in one city booking a flat for his parents in another must send the city of the door. His own sunrise does not govern their step. A Delhi possession email read in Jaipur is a Delhi document. The lagna, if the parents will enter in Jaipur, is Jaipur’s. If they will enter in Noida, it is Noida’s, which is not a poetic way of saying Delhi. Name the locality if you know the sky changes inside the metro. I will not subtract ninety minutes from an Indian list and hand it to a Gulf flat. A household taking a flat in Dubai or Abu Dhabi needs that city’s clock. Sunday is a working day there. A muhurat copied from a Sultanpur Sunday morning can fall on a school run.

The people who should be at the door are the people who will sleep there, as far as the family can manage. A puja done entirely for absent owners, with a watchman as the only witness, is a thin entry. Do it when at least one person who will keep the kitchen can cross. The others may arrive later without a second muhurat, once the house has been opened properly. I will not sell two entries because two brothers want two photographs.

Write on WhatsApp if the range is already short because a landlord, a builder, or a school term has closed most of it. Send what remains, not a wish for ‘any auspicious day’. I am in Sultanpur. If the date is fixed and the house has asked, I travel. If you can come, the sitting is in India. If you only need the hour named, the word can be live. Dakshina is spoken before, not printed. There is no online payment.

Is the possession date the muhurat?

No. It is the day the keys may be available. The muhurat is a lagna in the city of the door, inside days you can truly be there.

Can we enter on any Sunday?

Sunday is a weekday, not a muhurat. Send the city and the real range. I will not bless a Sunday from a headline.

Does the puja increase the value of the house?

No. Shanti settles the entry. It does not promise price, rent, a buyer, or the end of a loan.

Do we need the owner’s kundli?

The hour is read from the panchang of the door. A kundli is a different sitting. Bring it if you also want the owner’s year looked at. Do not hide it inside the milk.
