Diwali in Jaipur 2026 — Sunday 8 November, the courtyard and the bahi

Diwali in Jaipur is the same Kartik Amavasya as Delhi, and it is not the same evening. Delhi keeps the night in a flat, with a residents’ group and a detector above the curtain. Jaipur, in the houses that write to me from the walled city, from Bani Park, from the colonies beyond Ajmer Road, keeps it as a courtyard that can hold a line of clay lamps, and, where the family still trades, as a new bahi opened in front of Lakshmi. People mix the two cities because both are ‘India’ and both say Diwali on 8 November. The date is shared. The sky is not. The room is not.
I am writing this on 22 October 2026, from Sultanpur. I do not live in Jaipur and I will not invent a haveli for myself. On the working sheet I use, Lakshmi Puja is Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November. Govardhan Puja and the Annakut that many Krishna houses in this region keep is Tuesday 10 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November. A separate article on this site is the Delhi flat, with Delhi’s earlier window. Read that if your thali is in Dwarka. If the diyas are on a sandstone ledge in Jaipur, stay on this page.
Jaipur’s clock is not Delhi’s clock plus a shrug
Both cities use Indian Standard Time. That sentence makes people lazy. Jaipur sits west of Delhi, so the sun leaves later. On the working figures for Sunday 8 November, Jaipur’s Lakshmi Puja window is about 6:03 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., while Delhi’s is about 5:54 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. The gap is small and it is real. A mother who lights the lamp because a brother in Karol Bagh has texted ‘we have started’ is early for her own pradosh. On Sunday morning open one panchang set to Jaipur. Write the sunset and the puja stretch. Put the Delhi forward face-down.
Dhanteras, Friday 6 November, is the same kind of shift. Delhi’s working puja stretch that evening is about 6:02 p.m. to 7:57 p.m. Jaipur’s working stretch is a little later, near 6:11 p.m. to 8:07 p.m. on the figures I have seen. I print them as working figures, not as a muhurat you must hit to the minute. Confirm Jaipur that morning. Jodhpur, Ajmer and Kota are not Jaipur. If the shop is in the walled city and the house is in Vaishali Nagar, use the sky where the lamp will actually stand.
The courtyard, not the society group
What I hear from Jaipur is stone, not a circular. A line of diyas along a jharokha, the step, the courtyard floor. A brass thali. Marigold. The door left open enough for the evening to enter and not so open that the wind kills every wick. If you are in a new flat on the edge of the city, you do not have that courtyard. Do not fake one with a photograph of Amer. A ledge, a plate, and the lamps you can watch are the rite. The walled city is not a costume the suburb must wear.
Village houses around Jaipur still draw mandana on the wall and the floor, the white and red geometry of this region. The walled city more often uses rangoli and the lamps. I will not collapse both into one ‘Rajasthani look’. Ask the house you are actually in. A guest from Delhi who arrives with a printed sticker-rangoli has not improved a mandana floor.
Fireworks are the same distraction here as anywhere. The lamp is the puja. A child and a firework are a hospital matter if it goes wrong. I will not bless a cracker.
The bahi is an account, not a spell
Trading families in Jaipur and the towns that trade with it open a new bahi at Lakshmi Puja. The old book is closed with respect. The new page is marked, often with a swastik drawn by hand, and the first figures of the shop are written after the puja, not during the aarti because a camera is waiting. I have watched this done on a dining table in a modern house and on a gaddi in a gali off Johari Bazaar. The furniture changes. The idea does not. The book is the shop’s memory. It is not a device that forces a profit.
I will not tell you that a new bahi brings a good year of sales, or that a gold purchase on Dhanteras returns itself. Buy what the house needs. A broom, a vessel, a few coins on the thali, are older and enough. Kubera’s name in the puja is not a target for the year. If the shop had a loss, the lamp does not erase it, and I will not say it does.
Households that do not trade do not need a bahi to make the evening valid. A service family, a teacher, a workshop that keeps no cloth book — their Lakshmi is the same lamp. Do not let a cousin’s shop shame a house that has no ledger.
Sunday evening, then a different Tuesday
On Sunday 8 November the sequence in the ordinary house here is the one the elders already have: Ganesha, Lakshmi, the lamp, food set down before anyone eats it. If your mother includes Saraswati or the kuldevta, include them. I will not replace her order with a list from another state. Sweets are what the kitchen can finish. A market box can sit beside them. It cannot be the whole thali.
The oil bath tied to Naraka Chaturdashi, in this year’s long tithi, belongs before sunrise on Sunday for many houses, while Saturday evening carries the smaller lamps. Confirm with your elders. Do not take Delhi’s dawn and Jaipur’s dusk from two different chats.
Tuesday 10 November is Govardhan. In this region that morning and day often carry an Annakut, a mountain of food offered to Krishna, and in village courtyards a small Govardhan of cow dung. That is not Sunday’s Lakshmi moved by two days. Keep them apart. A house that spends Sunday night building Tuesday’s Annakut will slight both. Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November is the sister’s tilak, a short rite in the morning or whenever your house has always done it. It does not need the Diwali muhurat.
From Sultanpur, honestly
You do not need a pandit imported for the lamp. If the bahi is being opened and you want the time read for Jaipur, or a short live sitting while the family is gathered, write on WhatsApp and name the neighbourhood. There is no online payment. Dakshina is spoken before Sunday. I am based in Sultanpur. Travel happens when a date is fixed. A sitting happens in India when you come. A live link is enough for most courtyards. I will not pretend the walled city is a place I sleep.
Questions people ask
When is Diwali 2026 in Jaipur?
Lakshmi Puja is Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November. Govardhan and Annakut are Tuesday 10 November. Bhai Dooj is Wednesday 11 November.
What time should we sit in Jaipur?
The working window is about 6:03 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. IST. It is later than Delhi. Confirm a Jaipur panchang on Sunday morning.
Is the bahi compulsory?
Only if your house trades and has always opened one. A home without a shop keeps the lamp and is not a lesser Diwali.
Can we follow Delhi’s muhurat to sit with relatives on a call?
Sit at Jaipur’s time if the thali is in Jaipur. They can watch. The sky you offer to is yours. A separate article on this site is their flat.
Is Govardhan the same puja?
No. Tuesday 10 November is its own day. Do not fold the Annakut into Sunday night.
